China, US to Construct Tourism Zone

China and the United States will jointly construct a big tourism zone in north China, including restoring some imperial buildings.

The tourism zone, to be built in Chengde city of Hebei province, three hours' drive from Beijing. will be on the venue of a famous summer resort for emperors and royal members of the Qing Dynasty (17th-20th century).

The zone will cover an area of 57 square kilometers and involve an investment of 3.6 billion yuan (some US$40 million).

At least two US companies and a Hong Kong company will take part in the program to construct the imperial gardens and palaces and some recreational facilities.

Millions of people visit Chengde every year to see historical sites, but many of them complained that there is few entertaining activities.
