Britain Summons Yugoslav Representative for Arrests of Spy

Britain's Foreign Office Thursday summoned Yugoslavia's representative in London to press for information on the two Britons and two Canadians who were arrested by the Yugoslav army on suspicion of spying.

"We summoned the head of the Yugoslav interest section at the Cyprus High Commission. A senior official formally protested about Belgrade's behavior in failing to confirm the arrests," a

spokesman for the Foreign Office said.

The Yugoslav army said it arrested the four men Tuesday night along the boundary with Kosovo. It said they had military equipment and explosives with them and appeared trained for sabotage.

But Britain said the two Britons were policemen who were sent

to train the Kosovo police and they were on holiday from their job in Kosovo when they were arrested.

Britain also alleged that it had received no formal notification of the arrests and Belgrade had failed to reply to numerous requests for information even though it was legally bound to inform Britain if it detained any British nationals.

Yugoslavia broke off formal diplomatic relations with Britain in 1999 when NATO launched air strikes to force Serbian troops to pull out of the province of Kosovo.
