Bio-medicine Base Primarily Shaped in Shanghai

Shanghai has primarily shaped the bio-medicine base which is full of high-tech pharmaceutical enterprises.

All the enterprises in the Zhangjiang High-tech Industrial Park, in the Pudong New District, reached productive value worth of 2.4 billion yuan (290 million U.S. dollars) in 1999, with a 50 percent rise compared with that in 1998, Wenhui Daily reported.

A total of 18 pharmaceutical internationals, such as Roche, Smith-Kline Beecham (SB) Pharmaceutical Corporation, 999 Enterprise Group and others, have invested more than 2.5 billion

yuan into their affiliated plants in the industrial park.

Shanghai municipal government will pour another 445 million yuan into the park, which has been proposed as a "medicine valley" in China, the Shanghai-based newspaper said.

A high-tech incubator, with an area of 50,000 square meters, provides many preferential terms to 30 innovative enterprises.

The park also includes many key academic organizations, including Shanghai Medicine Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Chinese National Human Genome Center (CHGC) at Shanghai, the national new medicine selection center, the national new medicine safety appraisal center, Shanghai medicine research and development center, Shanghai medicine innovation center, and the traditional Chinese medicine engineering research institute in

Shanghai, the newspaper said.
