Russia's Putin Reaffirms Moscow's Pledge on START

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Thursday that Moscow will implement the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty-II (START II) and work to ensure the earliest conclusion of the START-III with the United States.

"The Russian leadership is consistently working to strengthen the regime of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and is making steps to promote nuclear disarmament," Putin said in a message to the 50th Pugwash international conference for peace, disarmament and international security, circulated by his press service here.

"By ratifying the START-II treaty, Russia will work to ensure its entry into force and fulfillment and the earliest possible conclusion of the START-III treaty," Putin said.
