Periodicals Strive for More Market Share

Chinese periodicals are striving for more market share by shortening publishing periods and linking themselves with the Internet.

Readers, one of China's most popular magazine with a monthly circulation of over five million, has added two urban editions and one rural edition aiming at some 80 percent of country's population, the Shanghai-based Wenhui Daily reported Friday.

Its editing authorities said that the average monthly circulation of the magazine has reached 5.2 million, a growth of 60 percent compared with that last year. The magazine is also planning to launch an electronic edition on the web next year, the newspaper said.

In recent years, many publishing houses in localities kicked off new magazines, most of them featuring entertainment and life-style, for earning profits.

Statistics show that of the country's 566 publishing houses, 164 run their own magazines. And more than one fourth of their income from running magazines in many publishing houses, the newspaper noted.
