Australian Opposition promises Abandon Support for NMDThe Australian Opposition promised to abandon the support for the United States missile defense shield. The Labor Party approved Thursday an amendment to its platform which commits it to abandoning support for the plan in government, the Australian Associated Press reported. "In government, Labor will review any Australian involvement in the National Missile Defense plan through the Pine Gap early warning satellite relay station or other arrangements," the platform reads. "Our judgment is that Australia should not support or be involved in NMD research, development or trials," it said. The Labor Party opposes the plan on the grounds that it could reignite the nuclear arms race. It was reported earlier by The Age daily that the Pine Gap early warning satellite relay station has already extended last year and started cooperation with the United States in NMD trials. The government has not yet announced it's support officially and clearly. Pine Gap located at the center of the continent and was initially a U.S.-Australia joint electronic spy station. |
