Chinese Tennis Player Gains Olympic Berth

Women's tennis player Yi Jingqian has gained the automatic berth for the upcoming Sydney Olympics, the Chinese Tennis Association (CTA) said on Thursday.

The International Tennis Federation faxed CTA on Wednesday, informing them that based on the women's rankings as of July 10, Yi, then ranked 77th, was eligible for the quadrennial Games.

Besides Yi, Chinese women's doubles players Li Na/Li Ting also obtained the automatic Olympics berth.

Yi, 26, reached her career high by reaching the third round of the Australian Open early this year, when she was still ranked outside top 100.
