Chinese Police Seize Pirates, Hijacked Ship

A ship hijacked by international pirates was returned to its owner, the Alavanca company of Japan, Thursday.

The Panama-registered oil tanker "Global Mars" was hijacked by pirates on the Andaman Sea as it was carrying olive oil from Indonesia to India on February 23 this year.

Chinese police in Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province, south China, was informed by the International Maritime Bureau on May 30 that the ship was renamed "Dulawan" and was likely to be sailing on China's territorial seas.

That night Chinese police stopped the ship at sea and arrested 20 suspects on board. At the same time, police seized oil cargo, one pistol, 189 rounds of bullets and two ammunition magazines.

The 20 suspects include 11 of Filipinos and nine Burmese.

Chinese police are questioning the suspects and hunting those still at large.
