Traditional Chinese Medicine Attracts Foreign Students

The second international training course on Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion being held in this capital city of Shanxi Province in north China has attracted students from 19 countries.

Some 34 students from Ecuador, Iran and other developing countries are participating in the 45-day program which started Thursday and will run till September 15.

Many of the trainees, aged between 25 and 54, have practiced traditional Chinese medicine in their own countries and taken a deep interest in the Chinese culture.

The course is one of the 19 courses sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation for developing nations. It is run by Shanxi's Public Health Department.

Specialists in acupuncture and moxibustion and some doctors with English background will teach the students at local medical institutes and research centers.

Based on the theory of "Jing" and "Luo", the vital energy channels linking the limbs and organs of human body, acupuncture and moxibustion is one of the important therapeutic treatments of traditional Chinese medicine.

No drugs are needed in the treatment, the curative effect is obtained simply by puncturing or applying heat to certain "points" of the body.
