Pollution of Lake Taihu Worsening

Recent surveys show that pollution of Lake Taihu in east China's Jiangsu Province has been worsening, due to a delayed pollution control work.

Of the 777 major polluting enterprises in the Lake Taihu Valleys, 541 have not yet met the country's pollutant discharging standards, accoding to the surveys.

This year, the lake water's content of phosphorus and nitrogen grows by 62 percent and 24 percent, respectively, compared to the 1999 level.

Jiangsu has planned to build 82 sewage disposal plants with a combined daily handling capacity of 2.9 million tons of waste water this year. However, only 27 have been completed so far, handling 1.16 million tons of sewage a day.

Experts say that without practical pollution control measures, Lake Taihu, the third largest freshwater lake in China, is impossible to become clear this year.
