Iranian Speaker Hails Lebanese Resistance Movement

Iranian Majlis (parliament) speaker Mehdi Karrubi here on Wednesday hailed the Lebanese resistance movement against Israel, saying it created great epics during the past two decades.

In a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Nabih Berri, Karrubi congratulated the Lebanese nation and government on the Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon.

The Israeli pullout on May 24, after more than 20 years of occupation, was a great victory of the unbreakable Lebanese resistance movement and the unity showed between the Lebanese people and their government, Karrubi said, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.

He also voiced Iran's readiness to help Lebanon's reconstruction, which is a difficult task because of the lengthy war against Israel.

Berri, who arrived here Wednesday for an official visit, thanked Iran for its long-time support and assistance to the Lebanese resistance movement.

Calling the Israeli withdrawal as the first big victory for Arabs and Muslims, he urged Muslim countries to strengthen solidarity in order to safeguard this great triumph.

Both officials expressed satisfaction with their bilateral relations. They also called for more efforts to enhance cooperation, especially between the two parliaments.
