First Batch of Ugandan Troops Withdraw from Congo
A flight carrying the first batch of Ugandan troops pulling out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) arrived at the Entebbe International Airport near the Ugandan capital Kampala on Wednesday evening.
A grand ceremony was held at the airport to welcome 450 soldiers flying back from the Congolese town of Buta, 350 kilometers north of Kisangani, the third largest city of the DRC. On June 21, Uganda ordered five battalions or some 4,000 soldiers, who assembled in Buta after withdrawing from Kisangani, to return home.
Ugandan and Rwandan troops have withdrawn from Kisangani after the two sides shelled each other in the city in early June, causing heavy civilian casualties.
Uganda and Rwanda have their troops stationed in the DRC to back rival rebel factions fighting against the DRC President Laurent Kabila. The two former allies clashed three times in Kisangani since last August.
