Crimes by "Floating Population" Fall in Beijing

Beijing police disclosed Wednesday suspects from outside of the capital were 5.6 percent less than the year-ago period, a decrease for the first time since the 1990s.

In the first half of this year, city police caught some 180,000 of China's "floating population" in the capital with no legal ID cards, no long-contract jobs and no regular places to stay.

Police also intensified their surveillance on rented apartments. During the investigation, the local police caught 6,903 suspects, 303 criminals, uncovered 373 criminal gangs and 4,487 criminal cases.

While the city government has strengthened law publicity activities of China's "floating population", crimes committed by people from other provinces in Beijing accounted for 54.8 percent in the first six months of the year.

People from other provinces, especially those working as temporary laborers in Beijing, have disrupted the city's social stability and security in the last few years.
