Fire at Immigration Tower Injures 47

A fire broke out inside a unit on the 13th floor of the Immigration Tower of Hong Kong around 06: 00 p.m. Wednesday, causing 47 injured, including 23 staff members of the Immigration Department of Hong Kong, according to a government spokesman.

The injured, at least three of whom were in serious condition, were rushed to hospitals for treatment, and the fire was extinguished by actuation of sprinkler head prior to firemen's arrival, the spokesman said.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee Hwa went to one of the hospitals and visited the victims soon after he was informed of the incident.

The spokesman said that at the time of incident, inflammable liquid was splashed and lit inside the unit, which led to an explosion. The case was still under investigation.
