A Breakthrough Achieved in Anti-AIDS MedicineA new kind of Anti-AIDS herbal medicine "SH Compound" developed by Chinese scientists has for the first time made a big way ahead in clinical practice.Since 1985, professor Luo Shide from the Kunming Botany Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with his colleagues, has been questing ways in Chinese herbal medicine for anti-AIDS virus. By the end of 1998, they had made studies on more than 1000 kinds of herbs for resisting the active HIV-1 with scores of them found effective. A book on this topic was also compiled. By combining traditional medicine and modern pharmacology, professor Luo developed "SH Compound" according to principles for mixing up the Chinese herbal medicines. On July 1997, an agreement for one-year cooperation was reached between the said institute and the related departments of Thailand, by which the Research Institute of Medical Plants, Center for the Control of Diseases under the Thai Ministry of Health repeated the experiments as Luo did, and resulted in the scientific data same as Luo had achieved. Clinical practices have been conducted in a hospital of Chiang Mai since last March. Among the 28 AIDS-patients received treatment, nine were found a great reduction of HIV-1 virus carrying in the body, 16 cases diagnosed to be stable, indicating that the medicine was effective in virus control. But it failed on 3 patients as they had already reached an advanced stage of the disease. The experiment has further proved that the "SH Compound" is not only safe and effective, but also without any side-effect harmful to patients as displayed in western medicine of the same kind. Besides, its price is only one tenth that of the western medicines.
