Kim Dae-jung Considers Merciful Amnesty

In commemoration of the August 15 Liberation Day holiday, DPRK president Kim Dae-jung plans a special amnesty for 30.000 convicted offenders, according to a high ranking official from Chong Wa Dae on August 2.

Minister of Justice Kim Jubg-kil will announce the list of proposed beneficiaries by next weekend after consulting President Kim for the final confirmation.

The official added that the amnesty is planned on the first Liberation Day of the new millenium to promote national unity reflecting the reconcilatory atmosphere between the two Koreas.

The amnesty list allegedly includes Kim Hyun-chul, son of former President Kim Young-sam and Hong In-kil, a former presidential secretary.
