Israeli Parliament Passes Early Election Bill in Preliminary Reading

Israel's Knesset, or Parliament, Wednesday morning passed a bill calling for dissolving the Knesset and holding a new election, another blow to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and his peace efforts.

A total of 61 Knesset members voted for the bill, submitted by the major opposition Likud legislators Silvan Shalom and Limor Livnat, while 51 MKs voted against it, Israeli television reported.
