Shanghai Leads China in Patent Application

Shanghai, China's industrial and financial center, had received 1,617 patent applications on invention in the first five months this year.

Statistics from the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) show that Shanghai led all the other municipalities, provinces, or autonomous regions in invention patent application in the five- month period, Wenhui Daily reported.

Beijing and Guangdong, with about 1,200 and 605 patent applications respectively, were ranked the second and third, the Shanghai-based newspaper said.

The total patent applications in China exceeded one million so far this year. SIPO encourages localities to apply for more patents, especially on inventions.
