Election Politics Should not Affect Sino-US Relations: Spokesman

China Wednesday urged political parties in the United States not to bring election politics into bilateral relations.

In response to a request for comment on the Republican Party's campaign platform put forward at its recent national convention, which mentions its China policy, and contains criticism of China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said, "We have taken note of the fact that in the US election campaign, the platform a certain party put forth at its national convention contains some content criticizing China, we are concerned about and express regret over it."

Zhu said China and the United States are two important countries in the world, and developing smooth and stable bilateral relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples and is also conducive to promoting stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

"We hope the US party concerned will have a clear understanding of the overall situation of Sino-US relations, and show due sense of responsibility and far-sight, abide by a series of commitments the successive US governments have made on bilateral relations, and do more things conducive to stabilizing and improving Sino-US relations, and not to bring US presidential election politics into Sino-US relations," Zhu said.
