Illustrated Book on Plagues in China PublishedAn illustrated book on the history of plagues in China and the latest research achievements on the infectious disease has been published, the first of its kind in China. The book, titled "Illustrated Book on Plagues and the Environment in the People's Republic of China", features the making, development and distribution of sources of the disease and ways to prevent and control the epidemic, using 284 maps and graphics. According to the book, the source of plagues usually contain high levels of calcium and iron, a discovery which they say will help prevent and control the epidemic globally. It says the calcium and iron-rich areas are semi-arid desert grassland in tropical areas and temperate zones, semi-wet grassland (including those in high and cold areas), and some wet and hot coastal forests. Tan Jian'an, a research fellow with the Geographic Science and Resources Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and one of the editors of the book, said their evidence was based on the analysis of plagues that hit China in the past two centuries and related research achievements by medical experts and geographers from home and abroad. The book was compiled by the institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the CAS Environmental Science and Technology Bureau. |
