FAW to Set Production, Sales Record

It is estimated that the production and sales volume of the First Automobile Works (FAW) Group based in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, will exceed 400,000 motor vehicles this year.

FAW would be the first automobile enterprises in China to reach such a level, if the estimation was accomplished.

FAW, China's largest automaker by far, produced 212,000 motor vehicles in the first half of the year, while its sales reached 206,000, according to FAW financial manager Teng Tieqi.

Confronted with the possible accession of China into the World Trade Organization (WTO), Chinese automobile manufacturers are striving to expand their market shares. The development of western China now prevailing in the country has also helped gear up the automobile consumption, especially heavy trucks.

In 1999, China produced 1.8 million motor vehicles, up 10 percent over 1998. It plans to produce two million motor vehicles this year, including 700,000 cars, according to the State Administration of Machinery.
