China To Hold First Grotto Travel Festival

The first Datong Yungang Grottoes Travel Festival is to be held on August 8 through 28 in Datong in north China's Shanxi Province.

The festival provides 15 travel routes for domestic and overseas tourists, featuring respectively grotto culture, Hengshan Mountain in north Shanxi, local ancient architecture, the Great Wall and other attractions featuring local flavor, the organization committee said.

Folk-custom shows, the international mountain-climbing festival and the international volplaning festival are also on the festival 's agenda. Meanwhile, a series of trade fairs are to be staged, the organizer said.

Located in Wuzhou Hill in Datong city, Yungang Grottoes comprises of 1,100 Buddhist niches and 50,000 stone sculptures of Buddha or Bodhisattva. It is reputed as one of the three "Grand Grottoes" in China. The other two are the world-famous Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang in northwest China's Gansu Province and Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang in central China's Henan Province.

Yungang Grottoes was cut in the 5th century.
