Arafat in Egypt for Talks With Mubarak on Mideast Peace Process

President of Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Yasser Arafat arrived in Alexandria, Egypt on Wednesday to consult with President Hosni Mubarak on ways of pushing forward the Middle East peace process.

Arafat went into a meeting with Mubarak in the Mediterranean port city, 220 kilometers northwest of Cairo, upon arrival from the Sudanese capital of Khartoum during his ongoing tour of Arab nations.

Arafat's visit is intended to keep Mubarak posted on the latest developments of the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations and brief him of the outcome of his current Arab tour, Egypt's Middle East News Agency said.

Arafat has visited Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria in a bid to rally support from Arab brothers for the Palestinian positions in the peace talks with Israel, especially on the issue of Jerusalem.

He will also brief Mubarak on his recent visit to France, where he held talks with President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, the news agency said.

France is holding the rotating presidency of the 15-nation European Union, which is keen on playing a key role in mediating the Mideast peace process.

Arafat frequently travels to Egypt for consultations with Mubarak on the Mideast peace talks. He visited Egypt a week ago on his way back from the Camp David summit with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in the United States.

The 15-day Camp David talks ended last Tuesday without an agreement on the most difficult issues, including Jerusalem, refugees, settlements and borders.
