Yang Chen Ning: Calls for Youths to Challenge Academic Authority

Nobel laureate Yang Chen Ning called for Chinese youths to challenge academic authority, which he considers helpful to fully developing of China's science.

Yang Chen Ning made the remark in response to a question posed at the Third International Physics Conference of Overseas Chinese, held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He said that the Chinese tradition emphasizing the relationship between education and ethics helps the overall development of youngsters. They should not forget Chinese tradition at the expense of learning the newest foreign technologies.

However, the physicist also pointed out that Chinese youths lack courage to face challenges. They should learn from their western counterparts in this area. Only by doing so, will their achievements in sciences not be hampered.

China's youths should have a clear understanding of which direction they want to develop. They should continuously absorb new information while not forgetting our tradition.

Hong Kong has great conditions for the developing world class physics. Attracting talents in the technology fields to Hong Kong absolutely isn't a problem but Hong Kong should canvass talents from all fields to keep up with the global trends in IT, he added.
