Chen Shui-bian Still Evasive of "One China" PrincipleThe July 31 press conference held by Taiwan "president" Chen Shui-bian contains no "meaningful" suggestions to improve the current stalemate of relations across the Taiwan Straits, said Hong Kong-based Wen Hui Po on Tuesday.Chen's stubborn attitude of not admitting the "one China" principle shows he has no sincerity to solve ties with the mainland, the newspaper said in a commentary. During the news conference, Chen said it was "unnecessary and meaningless to get caught up in word games" over the "one China" principle. "This clearly reflects the real intention of the Taiwan leader, from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party, to where he wants to lead Taiwan island," said Professor Yu Keli, of the Taiwan Affairs Institute of the China's Academy of Social Sciences. "One China" is not word games, but a principle that the mainland government will not compromise on and is a prerequisite to fresh talks, Yu was quoted as saying by another article also on Tuesday's Wen Hui Po. During the press conference, Chen even urged the mainland to come to the table "in the spirit of 1992", when the semi-official mainland's ARATS and Taiwan's SEF agreed in Singapore to "one China under different interpretations." However, Chen refused to admit at the conference that ARATS and SEF reached the above consensus. He listed the consensus to only "dialogue, exchanges and temporrarily putting disputes aside when there is no consensus." Chen's mentioning of "spirit of 1992" is aimed at cheating and blurring the eyes of the general public, Yu said. After coming into power in May, Chen Shui-bian has made no change on his position on cross-straits problems. He remains evasive to the "one-China" principle which is actually the basis for peaceful, steady development of across-strait relations. What Chen and his deputy, Taiwan "vice-president" Annette Lu, want to do is not "one China" and "reunification of Chinese nation", while concealing their real motive of "Taiwan independence," Yu said. Chen called the "one China" principle a "question" in his May 20 "inauguration" speech, which has the same nature as the "two-state" theory pursued by his predecessor Lee Teng-hui, said the professor. Though Chen Shui-bian expressed his "willingness" to improve relations with the mainland, which is the "moral responsibility of the leaders of the mainland and Taiwan," what he really wants to achieve by saying the hollow slogans is to solidify his control in Taiwan, Yu said. During the conference, Chen said he would try to promote direct trade, transport and postal links with the mainland, but in reality he is afraid of the direct links, the professor said. (Chinadaily)
