China Unicom Gain Favor with Foreign Telecom Equipment Makers

China Unicom has become the hotspot of major foreign telecommunications equipment makers since its listing in Hong Kong and the United States about one month ago.

Ericsson announced a plan to supply the most advanced international switchboard equipment, shortly after China Unicom inaugurated on July 13 its Beijing and Shanghai international bureaus to provide its subscribers with IDD services.

Four days later, Ericsson said it was helping the Yunnan branch of China Unicom with a GSM network expansion project. Ericsson also entered into contracts with China Unicom's Jiangsu and Hainan branches on the expansion of local GSM networks.

In addition, Motorola has disclosed that its network system solution department signed three contracts with China Unicom on the expansion of GSM networks. The contracts are worth US$190 million.

Before the end of July, other telecommunications equipment makers will conclude deals with China Unicom for GSM networks in other parts of the country.
