Chinese Foreign Minister Calls on Singapore PM, Senior Minister

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan called on Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew separately in Singapore Monday and they had cordial talks on bilateral relations as well as international and regional issues of common interest.

Both Goh and Lee expressed their satisfaction over the smooth development and marked achievements in the relations between China and Singapore since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

They exchanged views on ways of deepening bilateral cooperation in the current world which is undergoing a fast-developing process of globalization.

Goh expressed admiration for China's research and development efforts in such fields as information technology and life sciences. Tang said China is willing to cooperate with Singapore closely in these areas as a way to further boost bilateral relations.

Tang briefed the prime minister and senior minister of the principled stand of the Chinese government on the Taiwan issue and the Singapore leaders reaffirmed that Singapore stick to "One China" policy.

On issues of East Asia cooperation, Tang said that substantial and notable achievements have already been made in recent years.

China attaches great importance to and will actively participate in the fourth East Asian leaders'summit to be held in Singapore in November, Tang added.

Tang also said that progress has been made in China's efforts to enhance cooperation with Southeast Asian nations and China stands ready to work with Singapore and other countries concerned to advance the continuous cooperation among East Asian countries.

Tang also briefed Goh on preliminary plans for the informal meeting of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) economic leaders scheduled to be held in Shanghai in 2001. Goh promised Singapore's "full support" to China's efforts to ensure the meeting a success.

On the third Asia-Europe conference due to be held in Seoul in October, Tang said the meeting, the first one in the new century, is significant on account it serves as a link between past and future.

Tang suggested that participating parties should look into the global developments and Asia-Europe relations, actively push for building a new international economic and political order, and ultimately contribute to the building of a peaceful, stable and multi-polarized world.

On the initiative of Asia-Latin America forum put forward by Goh, Tang said the initiative has promoted the understanding and cooperation between the two continents and China is ready to make contributions to the enhancement of the cooperation between the two continents, especially that of the dialogue and coordination among developing countries.
