Int'l Forum on Oceanic Science ClosesA two-day international forum on oceanic science-technology and economic development closed in Monday in the coastal city of Qingdao, in China's Shandong Province.More than 200 participants listened to reports delivered by officials and experts from the Development Research Center under the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Association of Scientists and the State Oceanic Administration (SOA). Wang Shuguang, director of the SOA, told the meeting that China has established 59 oceanic natural reserves devoted to protecting oceanic bio-diversity. He said that the Chinese government has made efforts to beef up scientific exploration of oceanic resources. China will work more closely with international organizations in this regard. The participants fully discussed the exploration and exploitation of oceanic biological resources. They hope that China will host next year's session with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. An official with the United Nations Environment Program said that the organization is willing to cooperate with China in preparing for the next forum. |
