Ocean Becomes New Economic Growth Point

Wang Shuguang, Director of the State Oceanography Bureau, recently pointed out in his report at an international forum held in Qingdao of Shandong Province, that the ocean economy has become a new growth point of the national economy of China.

Wang said: "in the past 20 years, the total output value of ocean industry has increased to 327 billion yuan and the annual average growth rate is about 25 percent which is much higher than the average growth rate of the national economy."

It's reported that the Chinese government attaches great attention to the development of oceanic industry, and is trying to foster and promote the development of new oceanic industry while steadily pushing forward the development of traditional ocean industry. Since the 1980s, the Chinese government has actively carried out adjustment of the structure of ocean industry and optimization of its distribution, and advocated scientific and technological progress, as a result, the ocean economy has presented a tendency of rapid growth.

Chen Qingtai, deputy director of the Development and Research Center of the State Council, has pointed out that according to the present growth rate of Chinese ocean industry, the marine output of China is expected to make up 5 percent of this year's GDP.

China is a large developing maritime country and has a coast line of more than 18,000 km and over 6,500 islands. China enjoys a fairly good natural environment and resources in its sea areas

as a whole and has many species of living things.
