Sixty Billion Yuan for Bohai Sea Environment Protection

The Chinese government will set aside 60 billion yuan (US$7.23 billion) into the ecological environment protection of the Bohai Sea area within the next 15 years, Monday's Guangming Daily reported.

Wang Jirong, deputy director of the State Environment Protection Administration (SEPA), said that the project aims to control the epicontinental pollution, improve and restore nearby habitats, and better administer the coastal areas.

The project will be implemented in three five-year phases starting from this year.

Of the total investment, 11.5 billion yuan will go tot 500 industrial pollution treatment projects, and 16.2 billion yuan will be devoted to the construction of 166 sewage treatment factories in urban areas.

In the meantime, 22.1 billion yuan will be invested in agricultural projects and construction of shelter belts, while 8.4 billion yuan will be used to improve fishery environment and build natural protection areas.

It is expected that the ambitious project is to reduce the annual emission of nitrogen, phosphor and COD by 46,700 tons, 15, 300 tons and 1.611 million tons respectively.

The project will help improve the environment of the Bohai Sea area and realize a sustained economic development in the coastal regions.
