China to Better Serve Overseas Chinese

Chinese authorities in charge of overseas Chinese affairs will provide better services for overseas compatriots and their relatives in China, a senior official said Sunday.

Guo Dongpo, director of the Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs under the State Council, told 2,000 young overseas Chinese attending a summer camp in Beijing that the country will improve the teaching standard Chinese (putonghua) among overseas Chinese communities this year.

The young overseas Chinese from 35 countries around the world are here attending a "Seeking Roots Travel in 2000."

At the dinner meeting this evening, Nhim Phuong, vice president of the Cambodian Chinese association, and Peter Zhang from Belgium made speeches.

Nhim Phuong said the overseas Chinese are proud to see the great achievements that their motherland has made during the reform period which started in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Peter Zhang said young overseas Chinese will continue to study Chinese after returning their home and help promote and build bridges of friendship that connect China with the rest of the world.
