British Airways Concorde Diverted to Canada

A British Airways Concorde carrying 66 people from London to New York was diverted to Gander airport in Newfoundland on Sunday after the crew detected the smell of fuel in the cabin, an airline official said.

"After a slight smell of fuel was reported, the captain diverted as purely a precaution because safety is paramount and will never be compromised," a British Airways spokeswoman in Toronto, Honour Verrier, told Reuters.

Earlier on Sunday another BA Concorde was grounded in London due to a refueling fault. At Gander airport, officials said the Concorde had touched down at about 6:20 p.m. EDT (2220 GMT) after the pilot requested a precautionary landing.
