Vice Premier Encourages Sound Development of Tourism in China's Western Region

China's vast western region should take advantage of its abundant tourism resources and develop a healthy industry, according to Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen.

The industry should make efforts to attract overseas funds, offering preferential policies, said Qian, who recently visited west China's Gansu and Qinghai provinces, as well as north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

While carefully planning the development of tourism industry, local governments should pay more attention to the construction of communications facilities around major western cities and scenic spots, Qian stressed.

He also pointed out that the protection and improvement of the western region's environment plays a crucial role in the development of the tourism industry.

In addition, China's western region may open a number of tour routes and establish a group of nation-wide places of interest, said Qian.
