Chang Wins When Gambill RetiresFourth-seed Michael Chang won his first title since 1998 on Sunday when sixth-seed Jan-Michael Gambill was forced to retire with a injury during the final of the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles, the United States.Gambill began the match with his left knee wrapped. It had been hurting him all week. Gambill won the first set in a tie-break but injured his right ankle late in the second, and he could no longer continue after Chang took the set 6-3. After the game, Chang said to break through and win a title was indeed special for him. The 28-year-old player continued that he got a little emotional with the victory because the last couple of years have been a little bit tough. The bad times started in 1998 when he played with wrist and knee injuries during the year, but he finished outside top 20 for the first time since 1988. It was even worse last year. He struggled to enhance his ranking, but failed to win a tournament, even to reach a final. In October his ranking plummeted to 76 in the world.
