Nepali FM on Furthering Sino-Nepal Ties

The historical good relations between Nepal and China dating back to thousands of years ago will be further strengthened in the new century, Nepali Foreign Minister Chakra Prasad Bastola predicted in Kathmandu recently.

In an interview with Xinhua on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, Bastola said that since the forming of the diplomatic relations in 1955, the bilateral relations between the two friendly nations have been developing even faster.

"Nepal and China have developed extensive relations at various levels, especially in political, economic and trade cooperations," said the foreign minister.

"As close neighbors, Nepal and China don't have any outstanding problems, and we support each other and share common views on various international affairs for the common cause of the developing world," he said.

Bastola pointed out Nepal-China relations are always in steady growth and constantly nurtured by the common policy of good-neighborliness and commitment not to allow the respective territory to be used for activities detrimental to the interest of each other.

"We have managed to work and interact like friends so that we can solve any problems that may arise between us, and we give such relations the highest importance," he stressed.

The foreign minister said that the cordial political relations between Nepal and China have made its extension into economic cooperations, which, in turn, further consolidated the friendship.

Over the past decades, the Chinese government has assisted Nepal's nation building, through economic and technical cooperations, notably in building Nepal's infrastructure such as roads, bridges, sports facilities, hydro-powers and so on, he noted.

"We Nepalese people dearly cherish and appreciate the political support and economic assistance extended to us by the Chinese government and people," Bastola said.

At the same time, Bastola spoke highly of the tremendous progress China has made in the past 20 years.

"Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has achieved political stability and economic prosperity, which is a great contribution to the world, especially to the regional stability and development," he said.

Bastola believes that with the great potentiality and a disciplined society, China will make a great leap forward in its development in the future.

The foreign minister hopes that Nepal and China will further expand political, trade and economic cooperations, especially in science and technology, in the new millenium.

"We expect big friendship from a big neighbor," he said with a touch of humor.
