Ocean to Provide Food Source For Chinese in Future

A senior Chinese scientists said in Qingdao on July 30 aquatic farms will become a major source of nutrition for the Chinese people by 2030.

Chen Yiyu, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told a national seminar on July 30 that the Chinese oceans will provide a huge potential for improving food for the country.

By 2030, the population of China is expected to reach 1.5 billion, placing greater pressure on the country's arable lands that account for only seven percent of the world total.

Chen and a group of scientists pointed out that China's output of aquatic farms now makes up over 80 percent of the world total. In the next few years, aquatic farms will grow up to 50 percent of the total fishery output in China.

Chen said rapid growth of aquatic farms will ease pressure on arable land, create more job opportunities, increase exports and promote economic development in coastal areas.
