Coastal City Protects Media Rights

Dalian, a coastal city in northeastern Liaoning Province, has given the green light to local news media to report on activities of government departments, enterprises and non-government groups.

No one is allowed to refuse a media request or interfere in the media's work, according to a circular recently issued by Dalian city publicity department.

The media are encouraged to expose bureaucratism and dereliction of duty as well as major problems closely related to people's work and life, according to the circular.

It urges all departments and individuals to respond to all critical media reports and cooperate with the media.

The media are also urged to be objective and fair and abide by professional ethics.

Journalists are banned from personally profiting from their reporting, it says.
