Chinese Vice President Winds up Five-Nation Tour

Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao left Alma Ata Sunday for home, winding up his 15-day visit to Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Describing the five-nation tour, the first by Hu in his current capacity, as a great success, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya said that it will strongly enhance China's ties with the five nations in the 21st century, which is the key to ensuring peace and stability in the region.

During the entire visit, Hu had been accorded high-level and warm receptions, and his meetings and talks with the leaders of the five countries have promoted mutual understanding, Wang said.

The visit, which coincided with the 50th anniversaries of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar, and Indonesia as well, and the 25th anniversary between China and Thailand, culminated the celebrations.

The vice president made several speeches during the tour, including one in Jakarta entitled "Working Hand in Hand Toward a Peaceful, Stable, Developing and Prosperous Asia."

In that speech, Hu expounded China's viewpoints and proposals on Asia's future growth in the new century.

In Bangkok, Hu delivered a speech on China's current economic situation and future development strategy, which was warmly welcomed by the Thai business groups and local Chinese communities.

During the visit to Belarus, the two countries issued a joint declaration on strengthening bilateral comprehensive cooperation in the 21st century.

In Kazakhstan, the leaders of the two countries agreed to make more contributions to safeguarding peace, stability and development in the region.
