Treatment of Taihu Lake Pollution Behind Schedule

Treatment of water pollution in Jiangsu Province's major lake, Taihu, has made little progress.

Work on the lake in eastern China is far behind the national plan, which calls for 82 sewage treatment plants by the end of this year. Daily sewage treatment is supposed to reach nearly 3 million tonnes, but the construction of 55 plants has not made any substantial progress.

Moreover, the installation of anti-pollution equipment at shipping and fuel stations, scheduled to be completed in 1998, still isn't finished.

Most shipping and residential waste is dumped directly into the lake.
