China Bans Poisonous Japanese Milk

China will not lift the ban on importing a Japanese producer's milk products unless the products are proved safe, China Daily reported on July 29.

Mailing or carrying the Snow Brand milk products into China is also not allowed, the daily noted.

The daily quoted official from China's State Administration for Exit-Entry Inspection and Quarantine as saying that negotiations between Chinese and Japanese authorities are needed before the product can return to Chinese market.

The administration imposed a ban on the company's products last week following reports that milk made by the giant Japanese milk producer, Snow Brand Milk Products Co. Ltd., has poisoned over 14,100 Japanese in late June to July 11.

Currently, the Japanese milk producer has restarted its operation, saying ten of its factories had no hygiene problems.

China has been an importer of "Snow Brand" milk, and the city of Shanghai is the major destination for Japanese dairy products.
