China Is Welcome to Join WTO, Says EU

The European Union (EU) said Friday that China is welcome to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), describing such a move is an important thing.

Asked by Xinhua at a press conference, Chairman of the visiting European Commission Delegation to Indonesia Commissioner Pascal Lamy said that China is a very important country in the world trade environment.

Lamy further said that the European Commission backed the Chinese government's bid to get its WTO membership, citing that it is a good move.

"Well, We want China in the WTO as soon as possible. And we believe that if China joins the system, it is good for China and good for us. We believes (that) it is important," Lamy said.

The European Commission is one of the key institutions of the EU and acts as its executive body.

The European Commission is in charge of the European Union's common commercial policy and represents the EU at the WTO and other international trade fora.

With an aim to obtain support for a new round of WTO negotiations and to explain the European Union position on the new round, the EC delegation arrived here Thursday for a two-day visit.

Indonesia is commissioner Lamy's first leg of his Southeast Asian trip which will also take him to Singapore.

Lamy said that he came to Indonesia to demonstrate the EU's support for the Indonesian government's reform agenda, to explore the ways and means through which the EU can support the country's efforts to build a strong and prosperous Indonesia.

During the visit, the delegation met with President Abdurrahman Wahid, Coordinating Minister for Economy, Finance and Industry Kwik Kian Gie and Minister of Trade and Industry Luhut Binsar Panjaitan.

The delegation is expected to visit Singapore on July 29.
