Welfare Fund Helps Disabled

The China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped (CWFH) spent 9.7 million yuan (1.17 million U.S. dollars) last year to help 60 million disabled people with their recovery, education, and even providing financial aid, according to report of China Daily on July 27.

Trustees of CWFH said that the fund collected a total of 14.47 million yuan from home and abroad last year,

"The fund will not only continue to care for the life, employment, recovery and education of the disabled this year, but will also focus on improving the job opportunities for handicapped people in western China," said Deng Pufang, head of the fund.

In addition, the fund also plans to organize some large-scale activities with the aim to encourage disabled people. And it will spend nearly 20 million yuan this year helping the handicapped.

About 73 percent of handicapped children are enrolled in the State's nine-year compulsory education program and almost 1,400 disabled students entered universities and colleges last year, CWFH sources said.

Nearly 16 million disabled people found jobs last year with the help of the fund. Another 2.39 million poverty-stricken handicapped were helped and 1.6 million received financial aid.
