Some people say that Tibet's future depends on the construction of freeway network because transportation network is an important symbol of modern economic development.

It is well known that there is no railroad and water transportation in Tibet because of its plateaus and with complex terrain. Road transportation becomes the important requirement for economic development, social progress and stability.

By the end of last year, there were 2.48 million kilometers of roads, forming a network with Lhasa as the center, five national highways as framework. Currently, except for Motuo county, 73 counties have open roads. 77% of villages and 61.5% of administrative hamlets are accessible by car. Lhasa is linked with Naqu, Rrikaze, Shannan by asphalt roads. Asphalt roads also connects Bangda Airport to Changdu and will link Lhasa with Lingzhi in this year. The asphalt road in the whole region is close to 20 thousand kilometers.
