New Oilfield Discovered in Songliao Plain

A new oilfield with reserves exceeding 100 million tons was ascertained near south of Songhuajiang-Liaohe (Songliao) Plain, this is a very important discovery for China, a country with most of its oilfields having entered the middle and late exploitation period.

China National Petroleum Corp. has confirmed this discovery and planned to invest 10 billion yuan for the exploitation of the oilfield within 3 years.

The discovery of the new oilfield attributed to a new thought raised by Wang Yongcun, a due-to-graduate doctor from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and also general manager of China Petroleum Jilin Branch, has for many years devoted himself to the exploration work in the Songliao Oilfield. It is this young "general manager" who has put the new idea into his doctorate thesis, raising it into a breakthrough theory. He said that China's most middle and large oilfields such as Daqing were discovered under the condition of geological formation, while the SongLiao plain new oilfield was found at a different rock formation. This means more rich oil deposit can be found in the vast plain of a rock formation.

The geological theory for oilfield of modern times is maturer in the study of formation type of oilfield. Generally speaking, the rock oilfield is a kind of recessive one and has little potential for exploitation. Few people are engaged in the research of such oilfield, and most of the oilfields of the world are discovered in the geological formation type, so are the Chinese ones. However, Wang Yongcun found another way out, except the already proven oilfield formation, he also studied the mechanism of forming and regular distribution of oil deposit in rock formations.

From 1999 up to now, Jilin Oilfield has, according to his idea, conducted exploration and a large amount of oil reserves have been discovered in Songliao Plain. This year, rock oil deposit has been proven to be at least 110 million tons in reserve and this is rare case in China.

According to Li Jiliang, teacher of Wang, China's current oil reserve has been found stand at 15 billion tons, Wang's discovery is of great significance for prospecting more oil reserves in China.
