Anti-smuggling Operations Help Raise Customs Revenue

A senior official said in Guangzhou on Wednesday that China's effective anti-smuggling operations have led to a great increase in customs revenue.

In the first six months this year, the total customs revenue reached a record high of 101 billion yuan (US$12 billion) , according to Ge Liancheng, deputy head of the state anti-smuggling and comprehensive management office.

He said only in the January-June period, customs and public security departments ferreted out more than 10,000 smuggling cases with goods valued at 2.89 billion yuan. More than 2,000 people were arrested for involvement in smuggling.

He said the seized goods included motor vehicles, steel products, refined oil products, cigarettes, edible oil, cultural relics and drugs.

China has achieved great success in cracking down on smuggling since 1998. A number of corrupt customs officers involved in major smuggling cases have been dealt with according to law, he said.

Tang Bingquan, vice-governor of Guangdong Province where smuggling once went rampant, said at today's meeting that his province will make further efforts to fight against smuggling, especially that from the sea and that of illegal assembled motor vehicles.
