China, Belarus to Strengthen Bilateral CooperationChina and Belarus hold unanimous views on major international issues and support the development of a multipolar world, said a China-Belarus Joint Declaration signed in Minsk Thursday. The joint declaration was signed here during the visit of Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao with Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko. The two sides hold that the international relationship of the 21 century should be built on the basis of the UN Charter and established norms of international law, the UN's dominant position in world affairs should be preserved and strengthened, and international disputes should be settled by peaceful means, the statement said. Relations among nations should be "developed on the basis of the UN Charter and the Five principles of Peaceful Co-existence, " it said. The statement said the world is diversified and that "each country has the right independently to choose the social system, road of development and the value concept that fit in with its national conditions." "The two countries support the development of a multipolar world and oppose the use of any pretexts to interfere with the internal affairs of a sovereign state," the statement stressed. China and Belarus are dedicated, together with other countries, to the establishment of a just and reasonable new international political and economic order, it noted. "The two sides said that the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM) remains the cornerstone for global strategic stability and should be fully and strictly observed. The Resolution on Preservation of and Compliance with the ABM Treaty adopted at the 54th United Nations General Assembly is of great importance in maintaining peace in the 21st century. Amending the treaty will bring about most grave adverse consequences," it said. "China firmly opposes any foreign country to incorporate China's Taiwan into the so-called Theater Missile Defense system while Belarus supports the principled stand of China," it said. The two countries will continue political dialogues and exchanges at all levels including the highest level to consolidate international security, deepen bilateral cooperation and enhance mutual understanding and trust, the statement said. Hu expressed his appreciation to the Belarussian side for their cordial reception, and conveyed President Jiang Zemin's invitation for Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko to visit China. Lukashenko accepted the invitation. Hu arrived here Tuesday night for a three-day official visit at the invitation of Belarussian President Lukashenko.
