China to Make Community Service Major Source of Jobs

China has decided to make the community service sector a major source of jobs for laid-off workers in the near future.

Zhang Zuoji, Minister of Labor and Social Security, said here recently that China will take measures to further develop community service and help more laid-off workers get re-employed.

Zhang said that an increasing number of workers are being laid off this year although 4.92 million of the 6.52 million laid-off workers found new jobs last year.

According to Zhang, China's community service sector now merely contributes 3.9 percent of the country's employment, compared with 20 percent to 30 percent in developed countries.

A recent survey shows that the urban community service sector in China boasts more than 15 million potential jobs.

Statistics show that in the past few years some 40 percent of the laid-off workers that have found new jobs are employed in the community service sector.
