Canada Officially Recognizes DPRK

Canada extended diplomatic recognition to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) on Wednesday, and Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy said talks on establishing formal diplomatic ties would soon begin. In officially recognizing DPRK, Canada joined Italy as the only major Western nations in the G-8 grouping of industrial powers to take the diplomatic step. DPRK has established diplomatic ties with Italy, Australia and the Philippines this year in what analysts see as an attempt to win badly needed economic aid to rebuild its devastated economy. The Pyongyang government is in talks with Britain, the United States and Japan to try to open talks to normalize ties.
