Gunmen Roam Fiji Town, Air Crew Kidnapped

Fijian nationalist rebels retaliated on Thursday to the arrest of their leader George Speight, with up to 50 gunmen roaming the city of Labasa and a flight crew reported kidnapped from an airport. "It"s not normal...they are threatening (people)," said a police spokesman in Labasa, on Fiji"s second largest island of Vanua Levu, describing the gang of gunmen. At Savusavu on Vanua Levu, an airport spokesman told Reuters three gunmen had kidnapped the pilot and co-pilot of an Air Fiji flight and taken them to the nearby village of Nabalebale. The gunmen made no demands and no shots were fired but they wanted to talk to the military, the spokesman said. Speight and several key aides were arrested late on Wednesday in a crackdown by the military, with gunfire reported as the military rounded up his supporters at a camp on the outskirts of the capital Suva.
