DPRK, Japan Issue Joint Statement

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Japan issued a joint statement here Wednesday on measures to improve relations between them, including setting a date for the 10th round of talks on normalizing their diplomatic relations.

In the statement, both sides agreed to hold the 10th round of talks in Tokyo from August 21 to 25.

The four-point statement was signed by DPRK Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun and Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono during their first meeting in 52 years, according to the Japanese foreign ministry spokesman. The meeting lasted more than two hours.

The statement said that based on recent positive situation on the Korean Peninsula, both sides expressed their intention to settle the past issues between them and establish good-neighborly, friendly relationship, and make all efforts for an early realization of this goal.

The statement added both sides agreed to tackle sincerely and solve appropriately problems between them, saying they will increase exchanges and visits in various areas.
